How to Scan Your WordPress Website for Malware

Do you feel that your WordPress Website is infected with malware?

You keep getting feedback from your website visitors and subscribers that your site is redirecting, and a red malware warning appears? These are signs that your WordPress website may be hacked or infected.

Here’s how you can scan and confirm that your WordPress website is infected with malware.

Use Free Online Malware Scanners

There are free online malware scanners that can automatically check if your WordPress website is infected. You simply enter your website url and it will be scanned for possible malware infection.

Here are two of my favorite free online malware scanners.

1. Sucuri Sitecheck – Sucuri is an online security company that provides free malware scanning. Just enter your website url and hit scan to see if your site is infected. In my experience, this online scanner is about 90% accurate and fast; however, sometimes it cannot detect malware codes injected in the database.

2. Quttera Maware Scanner – Quttera, another online security provider, offers free malware scanning. It offers a similar malware scanning service as Sucuri, the only difference is that sometimes scanning can take a little bit longer because you will have to be put on a queue before the scan runs. It is also, in my opinion, about 90% accurate.

Take note that the above free online scanners will only tell you that your WordPress website is infected with malware; they will not, however, show you the exact malware files where the malicious codes are injected.

Use Wordfence Plugin

If you want to know where the malware-infected files are located on your server, a good option is to use a WordPress security plugin that can scan for malware files.

The Wordfence plugin is a popular malware scanning and removal plugin. It is available for free download at the WordPress.org repository. You can instantly install the plugin inside your WordPress website’s administration. With this plugin, you can scan and find out if your WordPress site is infected with malware. The scan result will show you what files are compromised, and it will reveal the type of malware injected. Wordfence will also scan for backdoor scripts and phishing content inside your website files.

I can definitely recommend using this plugin because I also use it as part of my malware removal tools. If you want to remove malware from your WordPress site, Wordfence is a very valuable tool that can help you clean up the malware from your WordPress site.

Ask Your Host for a Scan

You can easily find out if your site is infected with malware by asking your hosting company to scan your hosting account. Most of these hosting providers will grant your request to scan your web hosting account to determine if your site is infected. After the scan, your host will usually provide you with the results of the scan in a text file or email you the results to see if they detected malware.

If your current web hosting company do not allow a request to scan your hosting account, then that is a sign that your under a bad web host. If this is the case, I recommend that you move your site to a better host. The hosting that I recommend to my clients is SiteGround it’s fast, secure, has daily backups, and provides excellent customer support.

If you can afford it, the best way to scan your site and find out if it’s infected is to hire an expert in WordPress Malware Removal. Online malware scanners and the Wordfence plugin may fail to detect malware infections, a malware removal professional is your best option.
